WHAT YOU’LL DO:

MGT is seeking a Director of Human Capital Consulting to lead and expand our national Human Capital practice. This is a remote position (work-from-home) with travel up to 25% for client engagements. In this senior role, you will lead high-impact consulting engagements that strengthen organizational capacity, leadership effectiveness, and workforce resilience across public sector clients, including state and local governments, education institutions, and special districts. You will oversee a diverse portfolio of projects encompassing human capital strategy, organizational assessment and design, leadership and talent development, performance management, and HR modernization initiatives.

As a practice leader, you will guide a team of consultants, shape business strategy, and ensure the successful delivery of solutions that help clients build effective leadership teams, engage and retain talent, and adapt to changing workforce demands. You will also play a key role in business development, thought leadership, and client relationship management, partnering with executives to align people, structure, and culture in support of long-term organizational success.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead Multiple Consulting Engagements: Oversee and deliver a portfolio of human capital consulting projects simultaneously, ensuring each engagement meets MGT’s quality standards, project timelines, and budget requirements. Serve as a senior project director for complex HR consulting initiatives, from initial assessment through final recommendations and implementation.
  • Client Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with client executives and stakeholders. Act as a trusted advisor to public sector leaders, understanding their challenges and objectives in order to provide strategic guidance and proactive solutions. Lead regular status meetings, present findings and recommendations to client leadership, and ensure high client satisfaction.
  • Practice Development and Growth: Contribute to the growth and strategic direction of MGT’s Human Capital Consulting practice. This includes identifying new business opportunities and client needs, participating in proposal development, RFP responses, and proactive sales engagements, and showcasing thought leadership in human capital management (e.g. presenting at industry conferences or publishing insights). By leading multiple high-profile projects and developing innovative solutions, you will help expand MGT’s presence in the market and drive our mission to improve public sector performance.
  • Team Leadership and Mentorship: Provide strong leadership to the Human Capital consulting team. Guide, manage, and mentor team members, from analysts to managers, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance team culture. Set clear performance expectations, provide feedback and coaching, and support professional development to build the team’s capabilities. Ensure that consultants have the tools and guidance needed to excel in their roles and deliver impactful results for clients.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Public Administration, Organizational Development, Business, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree (MBA, MPA, HR Management, or related) is preferred.
  • Experience: Ten (10) or more years of experience in human capital consulting, senior HR management, or other executive management roles. This experience should include a significant focus on talent management, organizational design, HR strategy, and performance improvement within the public sector. Prior experience consulting for or working within state or local government agencies, educational institutions, or similar public sector organizations is highly desirable.
  • Leadership & Project Management: Demonstrated success in leading teams of consultants or HR professionals and managing multiple complex projects to successful outcomes. Experience with performance management of staff and mentoring junior team members is important. A proven ability to oversee project delivery end-to-end (from scoping and analysis to implementation) while meeting timeframes and budgets is required.
  • Strategic Consulting & Business Development: Proven track record of driving business growth and developing client relationships through strategic consulting engagements or other executive level experiences. Ability to identify client needs and translate them into consulting opportunities or solutions. Experience contributing to proposals, shaping consulting offerings, or practice development is a plus.
  • HR Domain Expertise: Deep knowledge of human capital best practices and current trends in HR management, including areas such as workforce planning, recruitment and retention, performance management, training and development, and change management. Strong understanding of relevant employment laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, EEO, labor relations in the public sector) and a commitment to HR compliance and ethical standards.
  • Public Sector Insight: Familiarity with the unique challenges and processes of public sector human capital challenges is required. This includes understanding civil service systems, unionized environments, budgetary constraints, and the mission-driven context of government and education organizations. A passion for serving public sector clients and improving community outcomes is essential, aligning with MGT’s mission of social impact.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to articulate complex ideas and data-driven insights in a clear, compelling manner to diverse audiences, including C-level executives, agency directors, and elected officials.
