The Engineering Technician performs technical engineering, surveying, drafting, inspection, and project support functions for the Public Works Department. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical and technical skills, attention to detail in preparing engineering plans and field documentation, and a collaborative, customer service-oriented approach when working with internal staff, contractors, and the public.
Essential Functions:
The Engineering Technician supports the Village’s engineering and infrastructure programs by performing a variety of technical tasks both in the office and in the field. These responsibilities include assisting with surveying and construction staking, drafting plans and profiles, preparing cost estimates, and collecting and processing field data for public infrastructure projects. The position conducts traffic counts, reviews material submittals, and participates in inspections of roads, bridges, and utility installations to verify compliance with standards. Additional responsibilities include maintaining accurate field notes, operating survey equipment and Public Works vehicles, assisting with the private utility permit program, and coordinating project activities with consultants, developers, and other Public Works divisions. The Engineering Technician also responds to inquiries from residents, contractors, and consultants regarding engineering and Public Works projects.
Qualifications
• Knowledge of basic civil engineering, surveying principles, and construction practices.
• Ability to perform technical drafting, design, and field survey work.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with AutoCAD and GIS preferred.
• Ability to interpret plans, specifications, reports, codes, and ordinances.
• Strong mathematical, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public.
• Ability to operate and maintain surveying instruments, engineering tools, and field equipment.
Educational Requirements:
Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology, construction management, or a related field required.
Experience Requirements:
Minimum one (1) year of experience in engineering, surveying, or construction inspection preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting Rate: $78,505 annually. Full-time position, minimum 40 hours per week.
