Village of Arlington Heights

The Village of Arlington Heights is seeking a driven Civil Engineer I to join our Engineering Division. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated professional to build a strong foundation in municipal engineering and contribute to the infrastructure of one of the largest communities in the Chicago metropolitan area. As a Civil Engineer I, you will support a wide range of engineering activities including the design, management, and inspection of public improvement projects that help shape the Village.

In this role, you will play a key role in ensuring developments meet Village standards for construction quality, cost, and public impact. Responsibilities include reviewing engineering plans, conducting field inspections, preparing technical recommendations, and coordinating with contractors, consultants, and residents. The position also focuses on traffic-related work, including the review of transportation studies, the use of specialized software to analyze mobility and safety data, and the preparation of traffic-related memorandums and ordinances. This role offers hands-on experience in nearly every aspect of municipal engineering, including public and private improvements, construction oversight, transportation, project management, and safety analysis.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of civil and traffic engineering principles, construction methods, roadway design, and standard engineering policies, procedures, and codes. Candidates should be comfortable reviewing plans, analyzing data, and communicating findings clearly. Strong written and oral communication and customer service skills are important, as is proficiency with CAD, GIS, and other engineering software.

A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required, along with at least one year of general civil engineering experience, a valid Illinois driver’s license, and an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or the ability to obtain one within twelve months of hire.

The 2026 salary range for this position is $91,420-$123,420, with an anticipated hiring range of $91,420- $100,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
