Arlington Heights, IL – GIS Intern

Are you a motivated student looking to gain hands-on experience with GIS this summer? The Village of Arlington Heights is seeking a GIS Intern to join the Public Works & Engineering Department. Through this paid internship, you will have the opportunity to gain real-world experience supporting mapping, data collection, and asset management projects that make a lasting impact on the Arlington Heights community.

As a GIS Intern, you will work alongside the Utility Technician and Public Works & Engineering team to support a variety of Geographic Information Systems initiatives. You will assist with creating and maintaining GIS data layers using ArcGIS Desktop, updating existing mapping records, and managing geospatial data. The role also includes field data collection using the ESRI Collector application and supporting overall GIS database management and documentation.

Qualified candidates should be pursuing a degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Recent graduates (within the past six months) may be considered if the seasonal position aligns with their field of study and career development goals. Experience using ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap/ArcCatalog) is preferred. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and able to follow technical documentation. A valid Illinois Driver’s License is required.

Interns will work full-time, Monday through Friday, for approximately twelve weeks. The hourly wage for this position begins at $20.00/hour, depending on experience. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced professionals while building practical GIS and field data collection skills. Interns will gain exposure to municipal infrastructure systems and contribute to meaningful operational and mapping projects.
