Are you passionate about helping others, and making a difference in the community?  The City of DeKalb is hiring a Part-Time Community Service Officer (CSO). This non-sworn, civilian role supports public safety by providing a variety of non-emergency services to the DeKalb community.

As a CSO, you will assist residents, support police department personnel, and help maintain safety at events and during daily operations—without performing duties that involve arrests or active crime response. This role is a great opportunity for anyone interested in public service or exploring a future in law enforcement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responding to radio-dispatched calls and providing appropriate non-emergency assistance
  • Rendering first aid and offering general assistance to community members
  • Handling non-emergency calls, such as abandoned or disabled vehicles, lost property, and vehicle lockouts
  • Patrolling assigned areas on foot and in a vehicle; conducting premise checks
  • Enforcing parking, animal, and other City ordinances; issuing parking tickets
  • Participating in community events
  • Serving in low-risk roles such as traffic control when needed
  • Performing vacation house checks for out-of-town residents

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Coursework in Criminal Justice preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Availability to work varied shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to become LEADS certified within 6 months of hire

Position Details:

  • Part-time: 15–20 hours per week
  • Starting pay: $23.34 per hour
  • This position does not include benefits
  • Schedule varies based on department needs, including some shift, weekend, and holiday work
