The City of Aurora is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for the position of Laboratory Technician I in the Division of Water Production.

Under direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technician conducts and assists with chemical and microbiological analysis of the City of Aurora’s potable water supply. Duties of this position include but are not limited to: Perform routine laboratory tests to determine effectiveness of the plant; Prepare test chemicals, reagents, stains, and bacteriological media as needed; Collect samples from the distribution system and within the plant; Ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations; Perform skills required to maintain the Microbiology Laboratory Illinois Department of Public Health Certification; Compile data for various reports as required by the IEPA and IDPH; Perform routine cleaning and sterilization of laboratory glassware, equipment, and instruments; Other duties as assigned.

This position requires an associate degree in chemistry, bacteriology, or other related scientific field of study. This position also requires previous experience in laboratory work in either a water treatment, wastewater treatment, environmental, or college laboratory. Within 6 months of hire, this position requires the ability to learn and become proficient in the necessary skills to become IDPH certified in the Microbiology Laboratory. Must possess a valid Class D Illinois driver’s license.
Must successfully pass pre-hire requirements including but not limited to a written exam, physical, drug screen, and background check.

This is a full-time, union position. Starting hourly wage is $31.40/hour, after 6 months $32.12/hour, after 1 year $32.83/hour, and annual increases thereafter. Excellent benefit package available.
