ENTRY LEVEL:

The City of Aurora has opened testing and is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for the position of Telecommunications Operator with the Aurora Police Department.

Under the direction of the Lead Telecommunications Operator, Telecom Operators are responsible for receiving and processing emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and dispatching police, fire, medical and other emergency services accordingly. Duties of this position may include but are not limited to: Dispatch and track the locations of public safety agencies dispatched by the Aurora Police Department’s Telecommunications Center; Perform constant data entry and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems; Extract data and record essential information during emergency calls; Operate a variety of communications equipment including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Records Management System (RMS) radio consoles, telephones and other computer systems; Maintain required certifications to provide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and police related data entry and queries (Training and certification courses provided); Perform general clerical duties; Other duties as assigned related to position.

This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Candidates must be able to pass the job simulation test and type 40 WPM corrected (with 90% accuracy). Must have the ability to complete licensing requirements, speak clearly, work in a stressful environment, and multitask. Required to work rotating shifts during training. This position may require you to work the first, second, or third shift, including weekends and holidays and requires the ability to work mandatory overtime. Spanish bilingual skills desired.

LATERAL:

The City of Aurora is seeking experienced Telecommunications Operator (911 dispatchers) for LATERAL* hire with the Aurora Police Department.

*LATERAL candidates must have a minimum of two (2) years of employment as a full-time 911 Dispatcher/Telecommunications Operator with a law enforcement agency. Police dispatching and 911 call taking experience is required.

This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Candidate must possess the ability to work rotating shifts during training period. This position may require you to work the first, second, or third shift, including weekends and holidays and requires the ability to work mandatory overtime. Spanish bilingual skills desired.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Both entry level and lateral candidates must successfully pass pre-hire requirements including but not limited to a polygraph and psychological assessment, interview, background investigation, drug screen and meet physical requirements including a hearing test.

Salary:

This is a full-time, union position. Beginning hourly pay is $30.11/hour*, after 6 months: $30.80/hour, after 1 year: $31.39/hour, and annual increases thereafter. Excellent benefit package is included.

*Experienced 911 dispatchers/telecom operators with less than seven (7) years of experience will receive a pay step for every two (2) complete years of work experience in a certified 911 dispatching center.
