Located on the Thornapple River, Hastings provides high quality services for residents and businesses alike. Hastings hosts numerous unique events throughout the year and its public art displays are well known throughout the state. Hastings’ thriving downtown, quality schools, and prime location make Hastings a great place to live in any stage of life.
The Hastings Fire Department was formed in 1876 and provides service to the City as well as all or portions of the surrounding townships including Baltimore Twp, Irving Twp, Rutland Twp, Carlton Twp, and Hastings Twp (Locally known as B.I.R.C.H.). The Fire Chief is responsible for all resources and programs delivering fire protection, rescue, and hazardous materials response. The Fire Chief reports to the City Manager who serves under the Hastings City Council.
The Fire Chief will be a part of the City’s leadership team and be committed to superior local government service. The Fire Department receives its funding from the City’s General Fund and from reimbursable expenses by BIRCH. The annual budget is $526,000. The Fire Department has a staff that currently includes one full-time firefighter and twelve volunteer paid-on-call including the Assistant Chief and Captain. Additional positions are available but vacant. The Fire Department responded to 879 calls for service in 2022. The Department provides mutual aid for surrounding communities when needed.
The City is seeking a Fire Chief who places a high priority on staff development, communication, and public outreach efforts. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in leadership, strategic planning, team building, decision making, and emergency response.
Candidates are required to have:
• Associate degree in fire science or a related field and seven years of progressively more advanced firefighting and command experience. (The City, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience.)
• Fire Fighter I and II certifications. Fire Command certifications are desirable.
• Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License.
• Certification as a Medical First Responder.
• Other skills as outlined in the job description.
Salary range is $73,333 – $91,667 (DOQ). Provided benefits include employer paid premium health and dental insurance, life insurance, and MERS hybrid plan retirement.
