Job Description

Naperville’s Water & Wastewater Utility now seeks a reliable, responsible, & trustworthy individual to join the Water Distribution & Metering team as a Utility Technician. This job is based out of the Naperville Water Service Center (1200 W. Ogden Avenue). The Utility Technician helps to maintain the municipal water system, installing & repairing water meters, and providing great customer service to Naperville water utility customers.

Known as a leader and innovator in asset renewal, sanitary sewer rehabilitation and water system maintenance activities, Naperville’s Water and Wastewater Utility is one of the state’s largest combined utility systems, operating both a water distribution and sanitary district with wastewater treatment.

Reporting to the Water Distribution & Metering Supervisor, the working hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The selected individual will be expected to work scheduled overtime, emergency overtime, and stand-by as needed.

The vacancy exists due to promotion. This is a union position, represented by the IBEW – Local 196. The Collective Bargaining Agreement covers wages (currently a ten-step plan), benefits, and working conditions. A Utility Technician hired at the Step 1 wage rate ($27.57/hr) will, by contract, move to the Step 2 rate of $29.06/hr) effective on his/her anniversary date. Top Step pay is currently $35.86/hr.


-The Water Utility Technician’s duties include providing customer service to water utility customers and successfully resolving their issues/complaints. You will perform tasks including (but not limited to):

-water meter installation, repair and testing

-J.U.L.I.E. locates of underground water utility assets

-water quality testing, and

-vital water system maintenance (such as exercising and repairing hydrants & valves, repairing b-boxes, etc.)


-One year of prior waterworks experience, or two years’ utility location experience is required.

-Possession of a valid Class D Certificate of Competency as a Public Water Supply Operator, issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (or the ability to attain this license within one (1) year of employment) is required.

– high school diploma (or equivalent) is required.

-valid Illinois Driver’s License and a good driving record is required.

Preferred candidates will possess additional training in water treatment/distribution, wastewater treatment, mechanical maintenance, or in a related field. CCCDI certification is highly desirable.

Candidates must attend and work reliably, and must function well independently (without constant supervision). A proven work record of effective productivity and trustworthiness is essential for consideration.
