Job Description

The City of Naperville’s Police Department seeks a Civilian Law Enforcement Training Specialist who will work with the sworn training officers within the Professional Development and Training section to provide training to both sworn and non-sworn employees of the Naperville Police Department. This position is involved in the planning and conducting of classroom instruction, department in-service training, and quarterly training topics. The position also assists with the onboarding and training of newly hired police officers and police interns and serves as the department quartermaster issuing and tracking essential department-issued equipment. This full-time, non-union, civilian position will work Monday thru Friday, day shift.


The Civilian Law Enforcement Training Specialist will work with internal customers to design and develop lesson plans for various classroom, in-service, and quarterly training topics as well as deliver classroom training classes and in-service and quarterly state-mandated training. The position will administer the field training and evaluation program as well as the Police Internship Program; serve as the department quartermaster and act as a liaison with certified police academies; and monitor state training mandates to ensure the department remains in compliance.


An Associate’s degree and a minimum of five years as a police officer, or an equivalent combination education and experience is required. A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field is preferred. Additionally, preferred candidates will have experience as a Field Training Officer, Field Training Supervisor, or department Field Training Coordinator; a strong background in police tactics; and experience designing and delivering classroom and practical training classes. All candidates must possess a valid Illinois Class D driver’s license and will be required to successfully pass a polygraph test as well as a post-offer drug screen.

Top candidates will have a strong background in training and development with an ability to develop training plans and materials along with a knowledge of police tactics and law enforcement field training and evaluation processes. Excellent organizational skills and communication skills (both written and verbal) are critical.
