Assistant Director of Public Works
 
Summary
The Assistant Director of Public Works provides leadership, administrative oversight, compliance monitoring, and program management for infrastructure upkeep and maintenance of paved and vegetated surfaces. This position supports long-term planning, regulatory compliance, contractor oversight, budgeting, and daily operational coordination to ensure safe, efficient, and well-maintained public transportation infrastructure.
 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
–  Provide daily leadership and supervision of maintenance staff, including work assignments, coaching, and compliance with safety practices.
–  Oversee regulatory and safety compliance, conducting inspections, mitigating hazards, and maintaining documentation.
–  Manage the work order system (CMMS) by assigning, tracking, and ensuring timely completion of maintenance tasks.
–  Implement preventive maintenance programs for facilities, paved areas, vegetation, and specialized equipment.
–  Lead seasonal and weather-related operations, including planning, equipment readiness, and response during snow/ice events.
–  Oversee infrastructure upkeep, including paved surfaces, signage, drainage systems, and vegetated areas.
–  Coordinate contractor activities, verifying quality of work, ensuring safety compliance, and managing daily interaction.
–  Provide staff training and development, ensuring proper qualifications for equipment and vehicle operation.
–  Manage inventories, reporting, and administrative functions, including budget input and long-range maintenance planning.
–  Respond to emergencies and operational disruptions, supporting the organization’s emergency response structure.
 
Required Qualifications
– Knowledge of public works infrastructure, pavement maintenance, and related regulatory requirements.
-Strong understanding of snow removal operations
– Strong understanding of pavement systems, markings, lighting, drainage, and grounds programs.
– Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
– Ability to interpret diagrams, blueprints, and technical specifications.
– Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills.
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
– Valid driver’s license.
 
Education & Experience
– Bachelor’s degree in engineering, public administration, construction management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
– Minimum of 5 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
– Experience in budgeting, procurement, compliance, and contractor oversight required.
 
Physical Requirements
– Prolonged sitting.
– Ability to traverse properties, roadways, and facilities to diagnose issues and plan repairs or maintenance.
– Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
– Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time.
 
Work Environment
– Partially field-based with exposure to noise, weather, and active public works operations.
– Requires ability to respond to emergencies and weather events on a 24/7 basis.
– Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as operationally required.
