The City of Deerfield Beach is looking for a transformative leader with the ability to effectively manage change, deliver high-quality parks and recreation services, focus on fiscal stewardship, communicate clearly and attract, develop and empower talented employees that are dedicated to serving the residents of the community. There have been many challenges facing the City due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Staffing and operating budgets have been reduced in response to revenue shortfalls; however, the City’s fiscal responsibility does position us well for recovery from the economic impacts of the pandemic. The next Director must take the lead to assess the programmatic, personnel, and financial needs of the Department, have the ability to recalibrate as needed, and take advantage of this opportunity as we transition to normal operations.

The Deerfield Beach City Commission is a five-member body elected for a four-year term with two-term limits. The mayor is elected at large. Each of the four commissioners is elected by district. Each commissioner serves as vice mayor once during his/her four year term. The City Commission is the governing body of the City and exercises legal powers designated in the City Charter. The Mayor and two Commissioners were just elected to their second term. The Deerfield Beach City Commission operates professionally and cordially.

Since 1925, the City of Deerfield Beach Parks and Recreation Department has been vital to the quality of life for its community and residents. Today, the Department is comprised of seven divisions that include: Administration and Community Events, Recreation, Summer Camp, Athletics and Aquatics, Waterfront Operations, Park Maintenance and Cemetery. Deerfield Beach encompasses over 470 acres of parks, nature preserves, green spaces, medians, right-of-ways, and two municipal cemeteries.  Deerfield Beach offers its residents over 50 park locations ranging in size from large regional parks, neighborhood parks and multiple smaller pocket parks that are located throughout the City.

Residents can visit and enjoy any one of our twenty-eight playgrounds, tot-lots, outdoor basketball courts and tennis courts located throughout the park system. Recreation facilities include: four Community Centers, a Teen Center, a Tennis Center, Gymnasium, Aquatics Center and Athletic Complex. The Recreation Department also operates and maintains a mile-long award- winning beach and the 976-foot International Fishing Pier. The Department provides a variety of recreation and athletic programs throughout the year for residents of all ages, interests and abilities, including numerous special interest classes, after school programs and multiple summer camps. Additional recreational, social and cultural programs are available at the community centers.

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant City Manager, the Director leads a team of 156 full-time and part-time employees and oversees an operating budget of approximately $11.5 million. The Director manages, supervises, and directs all aspects of operations, maintenance, programs, events and activities of the Parks and Recreation Department. The Director performs long-range planning and develops budgets for the Department. The position is responsible for providing leadership and direction to advance department-wide initiatives, ensuring fiscal stewardship and administrative accountability, and promoting a culture of excellence and professionalism. 

The successful candidate will also be experienced in master planning, assisting in financial strategies, and delivery of high-quality capital projects. The Director serves in a key leadership position, representing the City as needed on boards, committees, and at events and meetings. The Director must possess well developed oral and written communication and negotiation skills with a record of success in developing collaborative relationships with elected officials, city leaders, community organizations, and city staff. The Director will be expected to continuously demonstrate the interpersonal skills and judgment to create trust, deliver results, and influence a positive inclusive culture.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation, Business, Public Administration, or a closely related field and at least six (6) years of experience in an upper-level management position in a Parks and Recreation organization of similar size.
  • Master’s Degree and NRPA Certification are preferred.
  • The salary range for this position is $109,215-$180,204. The actual salary will be determined by the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
