Wheaton, IL – Veteran Service Officer

Salary: $60,000.00 – $65,000.00 Annually

Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00a.m.-4:30p.m.

Department: Veterans Assistance Commission

We are pleased to offer the current job opportunity for a Veteran’s Service Officer within the Veterans Assistance Commission.  This position will assist Veterans and dependents in applying for Federal Veterans Affairs (VA) Claims and take them through the VA Appeals process as necessary. Both veterans and non-veterans are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities include:

• Complete initial application, or reopen existing claims, for compensation (service-connected disabilities) or pension (non-service-connected disability)
• Research medical conditions and obtain necessary medical records and statements from physicians to support the claim(s)
• Obtain necessary corroborating information and documents from the veteran, or other sources to support your claim
• Keep in contact with VA Officials and the veteran’s Power of Attorney (POA) concerning the status of individual claims
• Assist veterans in obtaining medical, financial, or other information necessary for the appeal
• Ensure all timelines are met so the veteran does not lose any potential benefits

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE
Requirements include the following experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience:

• Completion of an Associate’s degree in Social Services, Psychology, or a related field
• Two (2) years of experience in Information and Referral or Social Services
• Must possess and maintain in good standing, a valid Illinois Driver’s License
• Must obtain certification as a Veterans Services Officer within one (1) year of employment

Preferred Candidate will:

• Have experience working and/or volunteering with Veterans
