GovTempsUSA is accepting resumes from qualified candidates for an anticipated assignment an Interim City Engineer for Pontiac, Michigan (pop. 61,606).  This interim position will be up to 32 hours/week (at least 75% in person, 25% remote).  Pontiac is located in prosperous Oakland County in booming Southeast Michigan just 30 miles from Detroit.  

This position will work independently under the supervision of the Director of the Department of Public Work and is responsible for performing professional civil engineering and responsible administrative work in the designing, planning, and inspecting municipal construction and engineering projects; planning, directing and coordinating city engineering, electrical engineering, traffic control systems, street lighting systems; and assisting in the administration of the Department of Public Works when assigned.

This interim position is expected to start in early February for an anticipated three-to-six-month period, unless hired full-time by Pontiac during this initial term. (Referred to as a try-before-you-hire approach to recruitment. Although the position is desired to evolve into full-time position, it is not required.) The selected candidate will initially be employed by GovTemps with services contracted to the City of Pontiac.
Position Responsibilities:  
  • Provides detailed technical evaluation and civil engineering expertise of regional projects or programs impacting the City. Makes decisions as allowed or required by City code or as applied through conditions of permit approval.
  • Directs and administers municipal engineering and other operations including the design and inspection of public works projects.
  • Directs and coordinates survey work on construction, including preliminary layout and final inspection.
  • Supervises and direct Right of Way inspectors. Including Performance reviews, Personal Improvement Plans, on-site training and managing work hours and overtime.
  • Performs the duties of Street Administrator in accordance with Public Act 51.
  • Determines the need and order the layout of utilities, roads, street lighting, and street signage.
  • Conducts field inspections of construction and other engineering activities.
  • Assists the Director of Public Works in supervising the activities in the department when assigned. 
  • Assists in planning, directing and coordinating the Public Works Department’s work plan; meets with staff to identify and resolve problems.
Prepares and presents reports to City Council. 
  • Responds to difficult and sensitive public inquiries and complaints and assists with resolutions and alternative recommendations.
  • Manages operations and the closing of the City's landfill.
Position Requirements:
  • Be a licensed engineer in the State of Michigan at the time of hire.
  • Master’s degree in engineering. In lieu of a master’s degree, the City Engineer shall have a bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least five years’ experience in civil engineering.   
  • Three (3) years’ experience in civil engineering.   
  • Proficiency in Microsoft tools including Power Point for presentations.
  • Ability to review and approve CAD drawings.
Compensation and Application:
