Fire Chief, Janesville, WI (pop. 66,544). Janesville is the 10th most populous city in the state and the county seat of Rock County Wisconsin. The area was the site of a Ho-Chunk village and part of the Ho-Chunk Indian Nation. The city has a total area of 34.76 sq. miles and is divided by the Rock River running through the center of the city. The City seeks a fire service and EMS leader prepared to meet the demands of a community undergoing significant redevelopment and revitalization. The next Fire Chief will be an individual with a clear and dynamic vision for providing excellent, proactive emergency services. The Fire Chief position offers the ideal candidate the chance to build on a strong tradition of excellence. Janesville’s department is a modern, all hazards’ fire/EMS (ALS) service agency. 
Janesville has a city manager-council form of government with a city council consisting of seven members elected at large for two-year terms.
  • The department consists of the Chief, Deputy Chief of Operations, Deputy Chief of EMS/Support Services, Fire Marshal, (3) Battalion Chiefs, (4) Lieutenants/per shift, (3) Captains/per shift, (1) Inspector, (53) firefighter/paramedics, (21) Driver/Operators, (2) administrative staff, operating from (5) fire stations. The department is fortunate to have a separate training facility located at 3000 County F, (N. Parker Drive).
  • The Janesville Fire Department answers approximately 3,200 emergency responses (fire and others) and 7,800 EMS calls annually. All shift personnel are certified/licensed as both firefighters and paramedics and the daily staffing is 26 personnel. The department covers over 108 mi2, well beyond the city limits that include many rural fire protection district agreements/contracts around the city. Line personnel are represented by IAFF Local 580.
  • The department has a Class 2 ISO rating, and a budget of $13.1 million. 
  • The department provides ALS EMS and is part of the Mercy Hospital EMS system in Janesville.
  • The Rock County Communications Center provides emergency dispatch.
  • The Chief reports directly to the City Manager. The hiring authority for the position of fire chief is the responsibility of the Police and Fire Commission. 
Qualified candidates should have:
  • A bachelor’s degree in public safety administration or related field from an accredited college or university. A master’s degree preferred. 
  • Experience in a managerial role in the fire and emergency medical services, including a minimum of five years of experience in a progressively responsible command/supervisory positions at the rank of Deputy Fire Chief, Battalion Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, or equivalent duties and responsibilities commensurate with the position.
  • The successful completion of the Wisconsin Fire Officer 1 certification and/or Chief Fire Officer Designation is desired. 
  • Experience as an innovative, collaborative fire/EMS leader with demonstrated staff management, interpersonal and customer service skills. 
  • Well-developed writing and public speaking skills and the utmost integrity.
The starting salary range is $116,500 – $131,000 +/- DOQ, and an excellent benefit package is offered.  Residency in the city limits is not required but recommended.
