Pontiac, MI (pop. 60,984) – Located in Oakland County, Michigan at the crossroads of Woodward Ave., M-59 and Telegraph Road, a short distance from Detroit and Flint, Pontiac is the Heart of Oakland County! The first settlers arrived in what is now the City of Pontiac in 1818 at the crossroads of the Saginaw Indian Trail (now Woodward/Dixie Highway) and the Clinton River. Reporting directly to the Mayor/Deputy Mayor, the City Engineer is responsible for performing professional civil engineering and responsible administrative work in the designing, planning, and inspecting municipal construction and engineering projects; planning, directing and coordinating city engineering, electrical engineering, traffic control systems, street lighting systems; storm water management; regulatory compliance; budget development; and assisting in the administration of the Department of Public Works when assigned.
The City Engineer plans and directs the City’s municipal engineering and other operations including design and inspection of public works projects. The total employee count supervised by the position is up to seven (7) positions.
Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience:
  • Master’s degree in engineering and at least three years’ experience in civil engineering. In lieu of a master’s degree, the City Engineer shall have a bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least five years’ experience in civil engineering. 
  • The City Engineer shall be a licensed engineer in the State of Michigan at the time of hire. 
  • Possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license.
Knowledge and Skills: 
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of professional civil engineering, particularly as related to municipal public works and related activities. 
  • Considerable knowledge of construction methods, materials and equipment related to road construction, sewer, water distribution systems, street lighting, traffic signal, other electrical systems and equipment, and other public improvement. 
  • Considerable knowledge of City charter and ordinance provisions, state requirements, and other regulations regarding public works activities. 
  • Considerable knowledge of traffic control problems and the principles, methods and equipment utilized in solving them. 
  • Working knowledge of traffic engineering activities involving the study and design of complex patterns and the layout of traffic signals. 
  • Working knowledge of basic principles and practices of City planning and zoning. 
  • Working knowledge of the basic principles and practices related to architectural planning and design.
Ability to:
  • Ability to plan, organize, and participate in a wide variety of engineering, planning, inspection, and maintenance activities. 
  • Ability to develop plans and make decisions on complex engineering problems. 
  • Computer skills that encompass effective use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, computerized maintenance management software, GIS, email, and Internet browser software. 
  • Photography skills to document site conditions and work performed in the public right-of-way. 
  • Establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with employees, officials, professional contacts, and the public. Provide excellent leadership and management of employees.
  • Attend meetings scheduled at times other than normal business hours.
The wage range for the position is $132,000 +/- (DOQE), with excellent benefits. For exceptionally well qualified candidates the City will consider a highly competitive salary.
