Desktop Technician – Month Temp-to-Perm Opportunity (Chicago Area)
 
MGT is hiring an Onsite Desktop Technician for a full-time, in-person role based in the Chicago area. This is a 6-month temporary-to-permanent opportunity, ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on technical problem-solving, delivering excellent customer service, and ensuring reliable IT operations within a dynamic municipal environment.
 
Our client’s Technology Department is seeking a proactive, detail-oriented professional to support daily desktop and network operations. As a Desktop Technician, you’ll play a key role in maintaining the Village’s computing environment by supporting PC hardware, software applications, operating systems, and network connectivity. Serving as a frontline resource for troubleshooting, installation, and maintenance, you’ll ensure employees have consistent access to the tools and systems they need to serve the community effectively. Reporting directly to the IT Director, you will help sustain critical technology systems that keep departments running smoothly and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Install, configure, and maintain desktop and laptop PCs, peripherals, and mobile devices.
  • Provide timely troubleshooting and repair for hardware, software, and network connectivity issues.
  • Perform system imaging, data migration, and decommissioning of outdated equipment.
  • Manage software installations, updates, and licensing compliance.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of installed software and hardware assets.
  • Collaborate with vendors to ensure timely delivery and setup of new hardware and software.
  • Analyze and recommend improvements for hardware and software standardization.
  • Support operating system and application upgrades to ensure optimal performance and security.
  • Assist with user onboarding, training, and general technical support requests.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, including modern smartphone and device integration.
 
Education & Certifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in Information Technology or related field preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as CompTIA A+, HDI Desktop Support Technician, or Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) required.
Experience:
  • 2–4 years of hands-on experience supporting PC and laptop hardware, software, and operating systems in a professional environment.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues across hardware, applications, and network systems.
  • Experience working in a municipal, public-sector, or multi-site organization is a plus.
Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency with Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and standard business applications.
  • Familiarity with Active Directory, user account setup, and network connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Basic understanding of IT asset management, inventory control, and lifecycle management.
Communication & Leadership:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service mindset with excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical users.
  • Organized, proactive, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a team-oriented environment.
  • Valid Driver’s License
