Are you an aspiring arborist or environmental enthusiast looking to gain hands-on experience in forestry this summer? The Village of Arlington Heights is seeking a Forestry Intern to join the Public Works Department. Through this paid internship, you will have the opportunity to grow your skills while making a meaningful impact on the Village’s urban forest and natural environment.

As a Forestry Intern, you will work alongside experienced and knowledgeable staff to support a variety of municipal forestry operations. Under direct supervision, you will assist with tree inventory updates, tree watering, mulching, pruning, and removals. You will also help examine trees for potential diseases and make general ecological assessments to ensure compliance with municipal code. This role offers valuable exposure to urban forest management practices and day-to-day field operations.

Qualified candidates should be currently enrolled in a full-time college or university degree program in Forestry, Forestry Management, Horticulture, Botany, Ecology, or a related field. Recent graduates (within the past six months) may be considered if the seasonal position aligns with their field of study and career development goals. A basic understanding of tree identification and tree physiology is required. Computer skills in Microsoft Office and ESRI software are a plus. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, staying active, and learning in a hands-on environment. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid Illinois driver’s license. The ability to work outdoors in varying conditions, lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and safely operate power tools is required.

Interns will work full-time, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately twelve weeks. The hourly wage for this position starts at $18.00 per hour, depending on experience. This position is open until filled.
