Public Works Trainee – Public Works Department
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Eligible for Overtime)
Hourly Rate: $19.28 – $26.79

About the Role
Public Works Trainees work outdoors in all weather conditions, supporting full-time Public Works staff with infrastructure maintenance, forestry and groundskeeping, and responding to after-hours weather-related emergencies as needed. The position begins with a six-month trial period, including a three-month check-in and six-month performance review, after which successful candidates may be offered an engagement of up to one year, with the potential for additional engagements based on operational needs and performance. Trainees typically work approximately 40 hours per week, with periodic overtime as required. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and specialized Village familiarity that can be a strong advantage when future positions become available.
Responsibilities at a Glance
- Support forestry, groundskeeping, street, utility, and winter operations
- Remove debris, collect leaves, and perform grounds maintenance using hand and power tools
- Provide traffic control and assist with street and sidewalk maintenance
- Perform snow and ice control during regular and after-hours events
- Assist water and sewer crews with equipment and maintenance tasks
- Complete technical and safety training for infrastructure work
- Provide responsive, professional customer service
Required Education & Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) Less than one year of related experience
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Valid driver’s license
Technical & Physical Requirements
- Knowledge of construction tools, equipment, and safety procedures
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English
- Competence in using radios, tablets, and computers
- Physically capable of heavy manual labor, including:
- Lifting up to 50 lbs regularly, up to 100 lbs occasionally
- Frequent walking, standing, lifting, and tool use
