Water Plant Operator – Public Works Department

Salary Grade: Subject to current collective bargaining agreement (AFSCME)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Eligible for Overtime)

About the Role

The Village of Glencoe is seeking a skilled and motivated Water Plant Operator to join our Public Works team! In this vital role, you’ll help ensure the Village’s water treatment systems run efficiently, safely, and in full compliance with Federal and State standards. This hands-on position involves operating, maintaining, and repairing treatment equipment while monitoring water quality and system performance. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and a dedication to public health and safety. This is an on-site position that is staffed 24/7/365. Rotating shift work of 12 hours days/nights is required for this position including weekends and holidays. Water Plant Operators may also respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.

Responsibilities at a Glance

  • Monitor and adjust plant performance using SCADA, gauges, and control systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair pumps, filters, valves, and other essential equipment.
  • Conduct safety inspections and report or assist with equipment repairs.
  • Collect and analyze water samples to meet State and Federal standards.
  • Record operational data and lab results for performance tracking and reporting.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize process for water treatment.
  • Maintain safe, reliable water production and system pressure.
  • Assist with cleaning basins and general facility upkeep.

Education & Experience

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preference for two years of college or technical training in biology, environmental science, chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Veterans highly encouraged to apply.
  • Experience: One to three years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licenses/Certifications:
  • Illinois Class C Public Water Supply Operator License, or ability to obtain within 24 months of hire.
  • Preference will be given to applicants holding an Illinois Class A Public Water Supply Operator License.
  • Driver’s License: Valid passenger vehicle driver’s license required.
