Village of Gurnee

The Gurnee Public Works Department is seeking a full-time Maintenance Worker I for our Streets Division.

General Duties include a variety of tasks in the maintenance, repair, operation and construction of infrastructure such as:

–       Asphalt patching

–       Curb and sidewalk removal and replacement

–       Storm sewer system repairs or installation

–       Grading and ditching

–       Forestry work such as trimming, removals, stump grinding, and EAB treatment

–       Building maintenance

–       Landscape maintenance and mowing

–       Street lighting system work including replacing knocked down poles, replacing fixtures, locating and repairing faults

–       Operation of specialized tools, machinery, and equipment

Other duties also expected to be performed:

–       snow and ice control operations;

–       special events set up, clean up;

–       traffic control operations;

–       other seasonal responsibilities.

Specific work assignments are provided daily and may be rotated. Work includes the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor.

Schedule:  Regular work hours generally 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; additional work hours required including overtime, rotational on-call status, and 24 hour emergency call out on nights, weekends, holidays, and snow events with a 45 minute response time.

Minimum / Desirable Qualifications:

Minimum Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required. Class A with air brake and tanker endorsement preferred; must upgrade to Class A and obtain required endorsements within one (1) year of hire as a condition of employment.

Education and experience equivalent to a high school education level.  Additional formal technical training and/or certifications directly related to this position desirable.

1 to 3+ years’ experience performing construction, landscaping, tree trimming, infrastructure maintenance, experience with street lighting systems, or work of a comparable nature.  Previous municipal public works experience preferred.

Basic computer skills and ability to work with GIS systems and asset management software.

Certifications related to the filed including equipment and/or safety certifications.

Pay / Benefits:  $26.80 / hour ($55,754 annual).  Full time position; Village paid Local 150 union health / dental insurance; paid time off; IMRF retirement pension; clothing allowance.
