The Gurnee Public Works Department is seeking a Mechanic to join our Fleet Services team to assist in maintaining vehicles and equipment for the Public Works, Police and Community Development Departments. Pay / Benefits: $33.38 / hour ($69,422 annual); employer paid health / dental insurance; life insurance; paid time off; IMRF retirement pension; clothing allowance; tools and equipment provided by Village; union position – International Union of Operating Engineers – Local 150.

Schedule: Work hours generally 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; additional work hours will be required including overtime, 24 hour emergency call out / snow and ice control on nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to meet attendance and work schedule, including overtime requirements.

General Duties: inspects, diagnoses, tests, repairs and maintains a variety of equipment; uses electrical and computerized test equipment for diagnostic testing; repairs and maintains all vehicle and equipment systems; performs preventative maintenance repairs and inspections; operates a wide variety of equipment and vehicles; uses Computerized Fleet Analysis (CFA) vehicle maintenance management software; mounts accessories and related items on emergency vehicles and snow removal equipment; performs welding and fabrication on equipment; performs snow and ice control duties; performs related tasks or other duties as assigned.

Minimum / Desirable Qualifications at Time of Application:
Valid Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required. Class A with air brake and tanker endorsement preferred; must upgrade to Class A and obtain required endorsements within six (6) months of hire as a condition of employment.
Four (4) years’ experience performing maintenance, repair, and service duties on comparable automotive and construction vehicles and equipment.
Specialized or technical training in automotive technology obtained through an accredited technical college or career training institute can be substituted for 2 years’ experience.
Other combinations of education and experience, which could provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job, may be considered.
Municipal fleet experience preferred.
Experience with repairs and maintenance on Class 4 and above trucks and/or welding and fabrication experience desirable.
Graduation from high school / equivalent.
