Pay Range $72,711 – $106,303, starting wage rate will be competitive based on experience
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

Position Purpose:
The Village Mechanic supports Public Services operations by performing semi-skilled, skilled and administrative work in maintaining the Village’s fleet of vehicles and equipment, including scheduled preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles and construction equipment. The Village Mechanic supports the Public Service Department’s operations by performing vehicle and equipment maintenance on a daily basis and during emergency events, such as weather events or other emergencies.
The Village Mechanic provides internal customer service to Village staff by interacting with vehicle operators in all departments. The Village Mechanic is also responsible for preventive maintenance on Police Department vehicles, and may assist with Fire Department vehicles from time to time.

Supervision Exercised:
None. May serve as lead worker over crew workers assigned to assist with vehicle and equipment maintenance.

Job Duties:
Essential Functions:
•Performs skilled maintenance and repair of Village-owned vehicles and equipment. Inspects vehicles and equipment and schedules preventive maintenance.
•Plans, carries out and evaluates preventative maintenance schedules for allvehicles, mechanical equipment and heavy equipment (which may includeworking with outside vendors for such work); evaluates status of mechanicalequipment and vehicles and performs/schedules needed repairs.
•Performs vehicle and equipment preventative maintenance inspections and duties such as oil changes, fluids, tune-ups, brake replacements, belt replacements, tire changes, steering, suspension, hydraulic lifting and drive systems.
•Repairs, rebuilds and replaces small and large engines, power train components, hydraulic components on end loaders and backhoes, steering components, brake shoes, brake discs and ABS, hydraulic cylinders, air brake chambers and valves, carburetors, electronic ignition components, alternators, starters, generators, electronic fuel injection, etc.
•Performs engine tune-ups and maintenance on vehicles and equipment requiringthe use of computer monitors.
•Ability to diagnose, service, and repair various systems found on automobile,truck, and heavy equipment.
•Ability to utilize electronic test equipment and computerized to diagnose andrepair automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
•Installs added electrical and safety systems on vehicles including trailer brakecontrollers, strobe lights and controllers, two-way radios and chargers, accessorypower outlets and reverse cameras and monitors.
•Ensures proper chemical use in vehicle and equipment maintenance operationsand proper disposal of hazardous fluids.
•Ensures compliance with hazardous materials requirements and state andfederal environmental protection laws and regulations.
•Installs equipment for seasonal use such as snow plow frames, salt spreaders,sidewalk equipment, snow tires and other snow/ice removal equipment.
•Operates all tools and equipment needed to perform job duties while adhering toall safety rules and practices. Reports all accidents and injuries according toVillage Safety policy and procedure.
•Develops vehicle and equipment maintenance policies, methods and standardoperating procedures.
•Works with all Village departments and other organizations on vehicle andequipment maintenance related issues.
•Coordinates and supervises vendors that provide vehicle and equipment andparts maintenance services.
•Trains other workers in proper vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures.
•Responds to inquiries and complaints, responds to emergencies and resolvesservice requests.
Marginal Functions:
•Participates in snow/ice removal operations from streets, sidewalks and otherVillage property.
•Assists with special event operations.
•Performs semi-skilled and unskilled labor tasks as required.
•Perform other duties as assigned.

Environmental Factors:

The work environment includes a garage setting and the outdoors. The noise level is occasionally loud. The incumbent is subject to inclement weather conditions, working near moving mechanical parts, high levels of noise for an extended period of time and exposure to chemicals, fumes or disagreeable odors.

Physical Requirements:
Occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feels; reach with hands and arms and talk and hear. Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. May lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth and the ability to adjust focus. Occasionally works at heights/depths of 10 feet above or below ground.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Considerable knowledge in vehicle and equipment maintenance proceduresproblem diagnosis and repair. Ability to diagnose, service, and repair systems that include mechanical and computer electrical controls, hydraulic and air brake systems, air conditioning systems, steering, suspension, drivetrain, transmissions, gasoline engines, diesel engines, and pneumatic systems.
•Ability to use wire feed welders, stick welders, and acetylene torches.
•Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and report to work when off-dutyfor overtime, whether work is assigned or an emergency call-in situation.
•Considerable knowledge of the working and operations of an automotive repairshop.
•Knowledge in federal and state regulations regarding vehicle and equipmentmaintenance including chemical use and disposal.
•Ability to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications and drawings.
•Ability to train others assigned to vehicle and equipment maintenance operations.
•Frequent contact with other Village staff, outside contractors and residents; mustbe able to communicate verbally and demonstrate good customer relations.
•Ability to learn, understand and adhere to all applicable safety precautions andprocedures.
•Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools employed in vehicle andequipment repair and maintenance.

Position Requirements:
•Two to three years vehicle and equipment maintenance work experiencerequired. Associates degree in auto and diesel technology.
•Illinois Class B CDL required within 6 months of hire.
•Must be available for emergency call-ins including snow removal.
•Moderate computer skills required
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
•Possession of ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck Certifications or other ASECertifications.
•Possession of ASE Master Automobile Technician Certification.
•Education or certifications in the field of Public Works.
