The Village of Libertyville, IL (pop. 20,800), a northern suburb of Chicago, is seeking to fill a full-time opening for an Equipment Mechanic I – Parks Maintenance in the Public Works Department.
Duties Summary: Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled work activities related to maintaining and repairing Village owned vehicles and auxiliary equipment (including small engines), general Parks maintenance activities and other duties as assigned. This position is a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150 Public Employees Division.
Distinguishing Characteristics: The Equipment Mechanic I is a dual function position with responsibility for performing maintenance and repair work on the Parks Maintenance Division’s equipment (approx. 33%) and Parks general indoor and outdoor tasks (approx. 67%). This position does not have supervisory responsibility and reports to the Parks Maintenance Supervisor and Parks Maintenance Superintendent.
Essential Duties: Performs mechanical repair and maintenance of trucks, tractors, chippers, snow blowers, skid-steers, stumpers, utility carts, brooms, trailers, chain saws, pool pumps and equipment, etc. Follows service manual guidelines and techniques. Conducts inspections and documents repairs and services completed. Performs preventative maintenance, diagnoses problems and operates various power and hand tools, which includes but is not limited to scanners, air tools, meters, wrenches and sockets. Cleans vehicles and equipment. Performs snow removal, refuse collection, pool care, irrigation maintenance, and tree work. Observes standard operating procedures and safety practices. Attends training as necessary and assigned and actively promotes and supports the Village’s safety programs.

Required Knowledge and skills:
Knowledge of:
- Basic mechanical maintenance techniques and processes;
- Operation of Village owned vehicles and equipment;
- Functions of hand, power, pneumatic and electronic tools; and
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to vehicle repair.
Skill in:
- Reading and following work orders, using hand, power, pneumatic and electronic tools;
- Diagnose and trouble shoot mechanical problems and small engine repair;
- Communicate orally and in writing; and
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two (2) years of similar vehicle and small engine maintenance and repair experience.
Required Certifications, Licenses and Registrations:
- Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License.
Physical Tasks and Environmental Requirements:
There is frequent need to stand, sit, stoop, bend, work in confined spaces, lift heavy objects (up to 100 lbs. with assistance) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. Working Environment:
Work is performed under adverse weather and environmental conditions, exposure to hazardous chemicals, electrical currents, noxious odors, gasses and fumes. Work is performed in a fleet/equipment garage and outside in the elements.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary range for this position is $63,888 – $90,273. Hiring range will be from $63,888 – $68,801. Actual starting salary will be dependent on qualifications and relevant experience.
