DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF

The Village of Lombard is seeking a Deputy Fire Chief for the Lombard Fire Department.

Fire Department Description
The Lombard Fire Department provides the following services to the citizens of Lombard: Fire Rescue, Emergency Medical, Fire Prevention, and Public Education. Additionally, the department serves unincorporated areas that are contiguous to Lombard. The department has 65 total full-time employees. The department consists of two (2) fire stations, which are strategically located for serving the community. The Division of Fire Prevention is located in the Village Hall.

The Fire Department is organized into two (2) Divisions: The Division of Fire & Rescue and the Division of Fire Prevention.

The Mission of the Lombard Fire Department is dedicated to the preservation of life and property through professional services provided by skilled personnel.

Fire Administration coordinates all of the activities of each division, assuring continuity and efficiency of service to the Village.

The Division of Fire and Rescue includes firefighting and emergency medical services providing paramedic services and emergency rescue services. Fire and Rescue operates with one (1) command vehicle, one (1) tower ladder, two (2) engines, and three (3) ambulances. Fire and Rescue personnel are divided into three 24-hour shifts. Each shift consists of one (1) Battalion Chief, four (4) Lieutenants, and sixteen (16) Firefighter/Paramedics. The minimum on-duty staffing is sixteen (16). In calendar year 2022, the department responded to 1,744 fire calls and 6,274 EMS calls for a total of 8,018.

The Division of Fire Prevention is led by a Fire Marshal and has six (6) part-time staff performing fire inspections. Fire Prevention is charged with the responsibility of public safety in Lombard buildings. Inspections are done to limit hazards, ensure adequate maintenance, fire detection, and fire suppression. Fire Prevention reviews all building permits for life safety code compliance and provides life safety inspections during construction. Inspectors perform a high number of special hazard inspections as well. Fire Prevention inspects all premises that have a business license prior to renewal. Fire Prevention provides inspection of all special events, carnivals, and all liquor license establishments.

In addition, the Division of Fire Prevention coordinates the activities for Public Education providing programs for Lombard schools, Evacuation Training, Tornado Training and Citizen Emergency Preparedness Training.

This is a full-time position; 40 hours per week. Essential duties include: provide administrative support to the Fire Chief, ensure the readiness of Fire/Rescue to respond to and control emergencies, direct activities at emergency scenes when needed, supervise Fire/Rescue training, and coordinate and supervise the maintenance and care of fire stations, vehicles, and equipment and other duties as assigned. The work is performed under the direction of the Fire Chief.

Requires Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or a related field with eight years of experience as a full-time, sworn firefighter in a career department, with five years’ experience at the rank of Lieutenant or higher. A combination of education, training and experience that provides the prerequisite knowledge and skills for a Deputy Fire Chief, as determined by the Village Manager, may be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or a related field. Job requires Fire Officer I and Fire Officer II certification from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal or equivalent certifications and the possession of a valid Illinois Driver’s license. Starting annual salary is $139,790 – $163,088. You must submit both an application and a resume.
