Village of Mokena

Mokena, IL, population 19,887, is a suburban community located approximately 35 miles southwest of Chicago in northeastern Will County. The Village of Mokena is a family-oriented community with outstanding schools, parks, and excellent municipal services. The Village of Mokena is seeking professional, innovative, and self-motivated candidates interested in serving as the next Assistant Community Development Director.

The Assistant Community Development Director is a leadership position within the Community Development Department, reporting directly to the Community Development Director. This role is responsible for managing and supervising Building Department operations, overseeing land use and economic development initiatives, coordinating interdepartmental efforts, and ensuring compliance with building codes and zoning regulations. The position includes direct supervision of a team of building inspectors, plan reviewers, technicians, and administrative staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Building Department operations, ensuring policies align with Village Board directives.
  • Collaborate with Public Works, the Police Department, and consulting engineers to support village-wide development strategies.
  • Engage with community members, developers, civic groups, and government agencies to discuss and negotiate development plans.
  • Provide leadership in short-term and long-term village planning, including economic development, land use, and infrastructure.
  • Ensure compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, and nuisance codes, issuing corrections and citations when necessary.
  • Oversee the Village’s administrative hearing process.
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring the annual Community Development budgets.
  • Supervise the work of consultants and coordinate with external agencies; assist in grant writing aligned with Village Board goals.
  • Serve as staff liaison for the Site Plan and Architectural Review Committee, preparing agendas, maintaining records, and attending meetings.
  • Attend Village Board and other meetings as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree and/or professional designation preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of five years of experience in a related public or private sector field, with knowledge in land development, building codes, and employee supervision.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills; ability to interpret complex instructions and regulations.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in computer operations and business software.
  • Certificates: Must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License.

Compensation & Benefits:

The annual salary range is $114,364 to $130,132, depending on qualifications and experience. The Village offers an excellent benefit package, including participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, health, dental, and life insurance.
