Mokena, IL, population 19,887, is a suburban community located approximately 35 miles southwest of Chicago in northeastern Will County. The Village of Mokena is seeking professional, innovative, and self-motivated candidates interested in serving as the next Chief Building Inspector.
The Chief Building Inspector is a leadership position within the Community Development Department, reporting directly to the Community Development Director and/or Assistant Community Development Director. This role is responsible for directing, planning, organizing, and administering all facets of building regulations, inspections, and code enforcement within the Village of Mokena. The position includes supervision of building inspectors, plan reviewers, technicians, and support staff while ensuring compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, and other municipal ordinances.

Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and supervise the Building Department operations, ensuring policies align with Village Board directives.
- Provide technical guidance on building codes and regulations to staff, contractors, developers, and the general public.
- Coordinate interdepartmental efforts with Public Works, Police, consulting engineers, and plan reviewers to facilitate development projects.
- Ensure compliance with all building codes, zoning regulations, and nuisance codes, issuing correction notices and citations when necessary.
- Oversee plan reviews, inspections, and enforcement actions to ensure construction meets municipal standards.
- Provide leadership in the development of short-term and long-term planning for the department, including recommending updates to codes and ordinances.
- Prepare and monitor the annual Building Department budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of building inspectors and related staff while maintaining a positive and professional work environment.
- Represent the department at Village Board meetings, civic group discussions, and intergovernmental meetings as needed.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of experience in general construction, construction design, or construction inspection.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of ICC building codes, plumbing, electrical, and other construction-related regulations.
- Leadership: Experience in management and supervision of employees.
- Skills: Excellent problem-solving, communication, and customer service skills; ability to handle sensitive building issues effectively.
- Technical Proficiency: Ability to utilize computers, software, and office equipment for reports and record-keeping.
- Certificates: Must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
Compensation & Benefits:
The annual salary range is $105,736 to $121,492, dependent on qualifications and experience. The Village offers an excellent benefits package, including participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
