Northbrook, Illinois, with a resident population of 35,000 and a daytime population of more than 52,000, seeks a highly professional and progressive leader to serve as the next Deputy Village Manager.

Northbrook is a premier northern suburb of Chicago with a AAA bond rating and known as a family oriented, civic minded community with a small-town atmosphere. Many of its residents grew up in Northbrook and returned to raise their families in the community. The Village offers a full array of municipal services and operates under a council-manager form of government.

Reporting directly to the Village Manager and serves as Acting Manager in their absence, the Deputy Village Manager provides executive level management support to the Village Manager, Department Directors and Village President and the Board of Trustees. This position requires the ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in planning, implementing, directing, and overseeing the activities and operations of the Village.

The Deputy Village Manager must be a strategic thinker who brings leadership and communication skills to the Village in order to build relationships and effectively implement best practices/high-level customer service in collaboration with the seven departments which include the Manager’s Office, Development and Planning Services, Finance, Fire, Information Technology, Police and Public Works. The Village is staffed by 275 full time positions, 8.5 permanent part-time positions and 8.75 seasonal part-time positions and is party to four collective bargaining agreements.

Within the Village Manager’s Office, the Deputy Village Manager serves as a Department Director overseeing the daily operations of the Village Managers’ Office and provides direct supervision to full time staff including the: Office Manager, Communications Manager, Assistant to the Village Manager and Customer Services Representative. Key areas of oversight will include budgeting, long term capital and climate action planning. The Deputy Village Manager participates in the development and review of departmental submissions to the Village Manager for new initiatives in advance of Village Board consideration.  Upcoming special projects include oversight of process improvements to the configuration of the Village’s ERP in advance of 2026 migration of current system to the Cloud and supporting inter-departmental work related to design and development of three new municipal facilities.

Candidates must possess a master’s degree in public administration/related field and a have minimum of five years of municipal management experience or relevant combination of public and/or private sector experience.  Supervisory experience strongly preferred.

Starting salary range is $150,000 – 175,000 +/- depending on qualifications and experience.
