The Village of Tinley Park seeks qualified applicants for the position of Maintenance Technician in the Water & Sewer Division of the Public Works Department. The Village’s Water & Sewer Division is responsible for the maintenance of over 250 miles of water main, more than 4,000 fire hydrants, and approximately 3,300 water valves. Also, included in the responsibilities is well over 20,000 water service connections and sewer infrastructure totaling more than 400 miles. We take great pride in our water system which has one of the lowest rates in the state for water loss at less than 4%.
The Maintenance Technician will perform maintenance work to ensure the proper operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of the Village’s water & sewer infrastructure. This position will perform duties on the water system including water main repairs, fire hydrant repair and replacement, water valve repair and replacement, and water meter installations and troubleshooting. Duties for the sewer infrastructure system cleaning and televising sewers, manhole repairs, pipe repairs, and lift station and pumping station maintenance. Other duties include, but not limited to, utility locating and restorations. The Maintenance Technician will also be cross-trained across all aspects of public works operations. The Maintenance Technician will interact with and respond to members of the public as instructed or requested; operate a variety of equipment and vehicles individually or as part of a crew; and perform all duties as directed/instructed in conformance with all safety and security protocols. In addition, will performs snow removal operations under the direction of the snow command team. The position reports directly to the Public Works Water & Sewer Foreman.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Prior experience with construction and/or maintenance is preferred. Working knowledge of light and heavy equipment or ability to acquire within one year of employment is required. Valid Illinois State Driver’s license and the ability to obtain and maintain within six (6) months of employment a valid CDL Class B driver’s license with airbrake and tanker endorsements is required. This position will require the ability to frequently lift up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move over 75 pounds. Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, use ladders, and work and/or move in restricted or confined spaces. Ability to work snow and ice removal on a 24-hour on-call basis and work overtime hours as needed.
The ideal candidate will have a passion to learn about municipal water & sewer operations, ability to operate a variety of equipment, and understand the public works department’s commitment to meeting the needs to the community. They will be a self-starter who can performs work as part of a crew or independently, can complete expected daily activities in accordance with pre-determined work schedules in a proper and safe manner, and can establish and maintain effective working relationships.
This is a collectively bargained position under IUOE Local 150.
This position will be regularly scheduled for a minimum of forty (40) hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.
