Village of Tinley Park

The Village of Tinley Park seeks dedicated and responsible applicants to support the Emergency Management Agency which provides both emergency and nonemergency support to other Village public safety agencies, as well as mutual aid support to other communities. We are seeking to fill multiple year-round Part-Time EMA Member vacancies and multiple summer concert traffic control Part-Time EMA Member vacancies.

The position of Part-Time EMA Member is responsible for assisting, observing and reporting emergency and non-emergency conditions within the Village.  This is a non-sworn with no law enforcement authority.  EMA Members will assist in duties such as directing pedestrian and vehicular traffic, monitoring crowd control during special events (parades, festivals, street fairs, and other special events), first aid, shelter operations, emergency planning, donation management and other duties as required during a disaster or major incident.

EMA members regularly provide traffic control for major concert events at the Credit Union Amphitheatre and other large Village scheduled events throughout the summer months.  EMA Members also work with Fire and Public Works, and other communities on an as needed basis when an emergency arises.

Additional responsibilities include acting as a liaison between the community and the Police Department during their respective assignment, reporting conditions of streets, signs, curbs, sidewalks, obstructions of signs, signals, or vision, and observing and reporting conditions conducive to crime or criminal activity, fires, and request for medical services to the respective department of expertise.  This role will also provide support to Police, Fire, Public Works, other departments, and agencies as needed or directed.

High school diploma or GED is required.  Must be 18 years of age.  Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.  Prior emergency management related experience is preferred.   Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.   CPR certification is required within 3 months of hire.  Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with emergency management services, have an interest in serving the community, and be dedicated to working special events and responding to emergency situations whenever they may occur.  They must be able to safely operate Village vehicles in all weather conditions, work under stressful situations involving public contact, and work effectively independently with little supervision or as a team member and within the guidelines of standard operating procedures, department rules and regulations, and within the scope of authority for the position.  They will be vigilant in the detection of dangerous or hazardous conditions or situations and effectively convey and interpret information over the public safety radio network.

This is also a great summer job for student that are pursuing public safety and law enforcement careers to gain experience working large scale event, provide concert traffic control, and work along-side the Tinley Park Police Department, Fire Department, and Public Works Department.

Hours of work vary based on scheduled events and emergency situations plus generally 1-2 scheduled day(s) per month for regular evening meeting attendance and training.  Must be available for various shifts including day, afternoon, and evening.

Pay rate of $16.80 per hour during training period (typically 60-90 days) with the opportunity for an increase upon meeting EMA Member training requirements and demonstrated competency.  Must indicate availability at time of application.

NOTE:  This is typically a second job for many staff members and we recognize the commitment that takes to support EMA operations.   We require a minimum of 1 day per month for regular evening meeting attendance and training.  After successful completion of the initial training period, EMA members then sign up for available hours for scheduled events and/or for emergency situations as they arise.  Hours availability is high during summer months for concert needs and more limited during winter months.   A minimum of 120 hours annually is required to remain an EMA Member (average approximately 10 hours per month).  Average annual hours are approximately 350 hours. Individuals with open availability can work up to 999 hours annually.
