Village of Wilmette
The Village of Wilmette is seeking to fill the position of seasonal Fire Hydrant Inspector working in the Engineering & Public Works Department during the summer months. This position will work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday for up to a 12-week period.
General Responsibilities
The Fire Hydrant Inspector will work under the general direction of the Water/Sewer Superintendent and will be responsible for inspecting fire hydrants for damage, flushing sediment and debris from hydrants, lubricating and/or replacing hydrant caps, checking for obstructions around the fire hydrants, performing data entry and any other related work assignments.
Position Requirements
The successful candidate must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., operate (open/close) fire hydrants, and remove/reinstall fire hydrant caps. The candidate must have a valid driver’s license with safe driving record and possess basic computer skills to use an electronic tablet device (iPad) for outdoor work (i.e. read and record data attributes). Ability to use ArcGIS Field Maps application is preferred. Individual must be able to read maps or use GIS in order to locate fire hydrants within the Village limits. Position requires working outdoors, potentially during adverse weather conditions, extensive walking, and the ability to work independently.
Pay and Benefit
The 2025 starting hourly rate is $19.61 and 8 hours of paid time off (PTO). After the initial 320 hours of time worked, an additional hour of PTO will be earned for every additional 40 hours worked. Selection Process
Candidate should be prepared to undergo a pre-employment physical examination with a back evaluation to include drug and alcohol screenings, reference checks, and driver’s license records verification.
