Village of Wilmette

The Village of Wilmette is seeking to full the Permit Supervisor position in the Community Development Department. This position reports to the Deputy Director of Community Development.

General Responsibilities
The Permit Supervisor is a key position within the Community Development Department, responsible for supervising the private property and development permit workflow and overseeing two (2) full-time staff that have the main function of process permits. The position provides exceptional customer service to residents, contractors, and permit applicants at the front counter, over the phone, and through online platforms.

This newly created role will play a central part in the development of a new online permitting portal, designed to enhance transparency, efficiency, and customer service for the residents and property owners within the Village. The Community Development Department plans to launch new permitting software in 2026, and the Permit Supervisor will serve as an integral member of the interdepartmental implementation team-helping ensure a successful rollout and clear communication to users.

Position Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Urban/Regional Planning, Public Policy/Administration, Economic Development, Architecture, Business, or related field.

Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible permit/planning/inspection review or experience (municipal experience preferred).

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate with a variety of audiences.
  • Proven customer service orientation with the ability to provide clear, solution-oriented guidance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with GIS, permitting systems, and data dashboard preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Special Skill, or Knowledge Requirements
Current International Code Council (ICC) Permit Technician certification, or ability to secure it within six (6) months of hire.

A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required.

Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is Pay Grade I $84,712 to $112,409 DOQ

The position and starting salary shall be based on the candidate’s qualifications and certifications. Selection Process
Candidates will undergo multiple interviews. The selected candidate will successfully complete a reference check, a criminal background check, drug and alcohol screening (not including cannabis), and a driver’s license verification with the Secretary of State’s Office.
