Village of Wilmette

The Village of Wilmette is seeking to fill the Maintenance Worker 1 (Water/Sewer Division) position in the Engineering and Public Works Department. This is an entry level position responsible for assisting with operational maintenance of water distribution and sewer collection systems, and reports to the Water/Sewer Superintendent.

General Responsibilities
This semi-skilled position performs a variety of duties primarily focused on the operation and maintenance of the water distribution and sewer collection systems. The position performs manual work with public works construction and maintenance activities dealing with water mains, water valves, fire hydrants, sewer pipe/structures and repairs, snow plowing, emergency response, and maintenance work on streets. Work involves tasks requiring the use of hand tools and light to heavy equipment used in general utility maintenance and repair activities. This position requires availability for emergency response (overtime) outside of normal working hours, participation in the On-Call Specialist Program, water main break repairs, snow plowing operations and other related tasks as assigned.

Position Requirements
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience with operating heavy-duty vehicles and construction equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Work is often performed under difficult conditions, including extreme weather and confined spaces. The successful candidate must be able to lift 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis. Sufficient strength and agility are required to perform manual tasks for prolonged periods.

Essential position requirements include excellent communication and organizational skills, ability to work well under pressure, possessing the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously as well as have the ability to develop positive working relationships. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) class B with both air brake and tanker endorsements is required, or the successful candidate must be able to obtain the CDL within 6 months of employment.

Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is Pay Grade D $65,200 to $86,518 with a starting salary DOQ to include an excellent benefits package. Benefits include participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), medical, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, and voluntary participation in a deferred compensation program (457 plan).

Selection Process
Candidates will participate in multiple interviews. The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination which includes a back evaluation and drug and alcohol screening, background investigation and driver’s license records check with the Secretary of State’s Office.
