The Village of Wilmette is seeking a reliable, self-starter and team orientated individual to work in the Engineering and Public Works Department as a full-time Water/Sewer Maintenance Worker I. The individual will report to the Water/Sewer Superintendent and work closely with crew leaders and other employees in the division and department.
General Responsibilities
This semi-skilled position performs a variety of duties primarily focused on the operation and maintenance of the water distribution and sewer collection system. In particular, the person in this position performs manual work with public works construction and maintenance activities dealing with water mains, water valves, hydrant or sewer repairs, snow plowing, emergency response, and maintenance work on streets. Work involves tasks requiring the use of hand tools and light to heavy equipment used in general maintenance and repair activities. This position requires availability for emergency response (overtime) outside of normal working hours, participation in the On-Call Specialist Program, snow plowing operations, water main breaks, and other related tasks as assigned.
Position Requirements
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of experience with operating heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Work is often performed under difficult conditions, including extreme weather and confined spaces. The successful candidate must be able to lift to 40 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis. Sufficient strength and agility are required to perform manual tasks for prolonged periods. The successful candidate must possess a valid driver’s license. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL, Class B) with air brakes and tanker endorsements is
preferred or must be able to obtain a CDL and endorsements within six months of employment.
Compensation and Benefits
The 2024 annual salary is $61,757 to $81,949 with a starting salary DOQ. Selection Process
The successful candidate will undergo a pre-employment physical examination that includes a back evaluation, drug and alcohol tests, audio and vision screenings, reference checks, and a driver’s license records verification with the Secretary of State’s Office.
