General Statement of Duties:

Planning, organization, supervision and oversight of daily programs, services, and activities for youth in area of responsibility.

Essential Functions:

Assist with the planning, organization, implementation, and oversight of out of school recreational programs, services, and activities specifically for the Before and After School Program, Summer Day Camp, and other programs and events as assigned.
Prepare and maintain management reports and records regarding programs and services with an emphasis on maintaining District financial assistance and Illinois State Funding records.
Provide direct leadership and supervision for all assigned recreation programs and services.
Provide developmentally appropriate activities that meet the needs and interests of participants.
Assist in the development and implementation of goals and objectives specific to the area of responsibility.
Assist in evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of programs and services, making recommendations on the introduction or deletion of programs and services.
Assist with the development and implementation of a marketing strategy for recreation programs, services, and facilities, appropriate pricing and promotional efforts.
Assist in the development and implementation of specific program details consistent with the recreation marketing strategy.
Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of part-time, seasonal/ temporary staff, and volunteers.
Use discretion with confidential and/or sensitive information.
Contract with independent contractors and vendors for programs and services as needed.
Purchase, distribute, and maintain required inventory of all supplies and materials.
Transport supplies via park district vehicles.
Schedule facility program use as needed. Assist with management of facilities as needed.
Establish a cooperative planning and working relationship with community agencies and organizations.
Attend department and park district meetings and in-house training sessions.
Conduct self in accordance with the policies and procedures as established by the park district.
Participate in park district safety and training program to ensure that work performed and services provided are implemented in a safe manner.

Marginal Functions:

Assist with other recreation programs and special events as needed.
Participate and become involved with organizations and/or committees whose purpose is of benefit to the park district operation.
Assist staff and volunteers in the performance of their duties.
Attend seminars and training workshops.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or GED required.
Associate of Applied Science Degree program in Early Childhood Education or bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration, Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, Early Childhood Education or related field preferred.

Experience:

Minimum six (6) months experience in a recreational setting, preferably in a recreational department, school district, social services agency, or non-profit organization. May be obtained through a combination of seasonal, part time, or temporary positions.
Working with youth.
Supervising groups of youth in a recreational setting preferred.
Providing a variety of recreational activities for youth preferred.

Knowledge:

General knowledge of recreation, parks, and leisure services field.
Specific knowledge of developmentally appropriate activities for youth in a recreational setting.
Specific knowledge of out of school and day camp programs and services.

License / Certification:

Valid driver’s license required.
First Aid/CPR/AED certification required within one year.

Hours:

35 hours per week. School year hours are 6:45am-2:15pm; Summer hours are 9am-4:30pm. Work schedule may vary depending on the needs of the District and may include evenings and weekends or additional hours as needed.

submit to pre-placement drug testing.

may have to provide certification within area of responsibility.
satisfactorily complete six (6) month introductory period.

Residency:

Employees are strongly encouraged, but not required, to become residents within the boundaries of the Waukegan Park District.
