Staff Engineer I/II

The Village is accepting applications for a Staff Engineer I / II in the Engineering department. A successful candidate understands engineering processes, proactively identifies and resolves problems, and is familiar with municipal infrastructure systems. The position provides construction inspection/administration on capital construction projects; maintains maps and automated databases, and prepares plans and specifications.

Major Duties and Functions:
– Provides support on capital construction projects including planning, permitting, surveying, design & plan review.
– Prepares preliminary budget estimates, contract specifications, bid documents, construction administration and inspection for capital construction projects.
– Ensures construction complies with Village codes and ordinances in addition to compliance with contract specifications.
– Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding utilities, drainage and construction work; researches inquiry or complaint; verifies and resolves.
– Investigates resident concerns and coordinates solutions with other public works and community development employees.
– Assists other Village engineering staff with duties on an as-needed basis.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required:

Staff Engineer I
– Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices.
– Knowledge of the use of surveying equipment.
– Knowledge of construction project scheduling and accounting.
– Knowledge of reading and interpreting architectural and civil drawings and maps.
– Knowledge of IDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction
– Skill in communication, both oral and written, particularly technical writing.
– Skill in drafting and plan preparation.
– Ability to work independently and with little supervision.

Staff Engineer II
– All major duties listed above.
– Provides direction and training to Staff Engineer I, Engineering Technicians, and Administrative Staff.

Equipment used: In addition to general office equipment and software, smartphone, automatic survey level, global positioning system equipment, drafting/planning software, mapping tools and construction management software will be used

Minimum Qualifications:

Staff Engineer I:
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field, or any combination of education and experience which produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A valid driver’s license is required and Engineering Intern certification is preferred.

Staff Engineer II: Minimum Qualifications listed above, as well as: at least four years of progressively responsible experience in Civil Engineering, or any combination of education and experience which produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A Professional Engineering License is preferred.

This is a full-time, exempt position. Must be available to work occasional weekend and evening hours, as assigned.

Mental and Physical Ability:
– Analytical abilities necessary to apply technical knowledge to practical use by gathering information and producing designs, plans, specifications and reports.
– Moderate amount of physical effort required to perform field surveys. Ability to work in inclement weather and stamina to sustain walking through natural areas, climbing on uneven terrain without a loss of productivity or quality of work.

Salary and Benefits: The Staff Engineer I salary range is $69,422 to $95,456. The Staff Engineer II salary range is $83,136 to $114,312. The starting salary is dependent on experience and qualifications. The Village provides an excellent benefits package, including health insurance, dental and vision insurance, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
