Village of Gurnee

The Gurnee Public Works Department is hiring a full-time Maintenance Worker for our Streets Division. This position performs maintenance, service, repair, and construction of the Village’s infrastructure. Specific work assignments are provided daily and may be rotated. Work includes the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor.

General Duties:  a variety of tasks in the maintenance, repair, operation and construction of Village streets, storm sewer conveyance systems, forestry and grounds, building maintenance, street lighting systems and other public infrastructure.  Employees will also be expected to perform snow and ice control operations; special events; and other seasonal responsibilities.

Schedule:  Regular work hours generally 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; additional work hours required including overtime, rotational on-call status, and 24 hour emergency call out on nights, weekends, holidays, and snow events with a 45 minute response time.

Minimum / Desirable Qualifications:

Minimum Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required.  Preferred candidates will already possess a Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements.

Education and experience equivalent to a high school education level.  Additional formal technical training and/or certifications directly related to this position desirable.

1 to 3+ years’ experience performing construction, landscaping, tree trimming, infrastructure maintenance, experience with street lighting systems, or work of a comparable nature.  Previous municipal public works experience preferred.

Basic computer skills and ability to work with GIS systems.

Certifications related to the filed including equipment and/or safety certifications.

Other combinations of education and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job may be considered.

Pay / Benefits:  $26.15 / hour, with anticipated increase to $26.80 / hour as of May 1, 2024.  Full time position; Village paid Local 150 union health / dental insurance; paid time off; IMRF retirement pension; clothing allowance.
