Village of Roscoe

Performs the full range of duties in the maintenance and repair of Village buildings and grounds; performs carpentry, painting, plumbing, welding, and electrical work; performs building alterations; makes repairs and adjustments on electrical, pneumatic, and electronic control devices, hot water heaters, furnace, maintains ventilation systems, air compressors, emergency generators, and air conditioning equipment; installs electrical fixtures; performs cleaning and care of the Village buildings and facilities; maintains the assigned areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition; moves and arranges furniture and equipment; takes care of equipment and materials used in work assignments; mows and edges lawns and other grounds areas; trims trees, shrubs and hedges; waters ground areas; performs landscaping and gardening; participates in the remodeling of Village buildings; assists with the inspection of buildings and facilities for needed repairs; snow removal; constructs, assembles, and repairs furniture; may oversee and assign work to temporary work staff; provides lead direction and training to other Public Works staff; completes and maintains accurate records and reports; maintain confidentiality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·         Inspects and maintains buildings and equipment as a part of the Village’s preventative maintenance program (Fire suppression, security system, window/carpet cleaning, etc)

·         Operates tools and equipment used for building maintenance and various other construction projects associated with building maintenance

·         Performs HVAC and electrical preventative maintenance and troubleshooting

·         Performs a variety of plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting, and masonry activities

required for the construction, repair, and maintenance of Village owned facilities and buildings

·         Completes repairs and installs furniture, fences, locks, roofs, windows, as needed

·         Assists in the set up and take down of events and seasonal Village decorations

·         Assists the Public Works Street Department in the ice and snow operations, as assigned

·         Assists the Public Works Parks Department with mowing, landscaping, gardening and playground maintenance, as assigned

·         Obtain quotes for building projects

·         Follow and obey all safety and other Village policies and procedures

·         Resolves problems or calls for additional manpower as required

·         Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties above

Technical Qualifications

·         High School diploma or equivalent

·         Class B CDL or higher

·         Requires working knowledge of all heating, ventilation, air conditioning and mechanical building system

·         Requires a minimum of four years’ experience in repair and maintenance or related experience

·         Working knowledge of the care and use of the tools, vehicles, and equipment used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities

·         Working knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair procedures including carpentry, electrical, welding, plumbing, masonry, painting, and ground maintenance

·         Working knowledge of the hazards of the trade and appropriate safety measures and precautions

·         Knowledge of maintenance and construction tools and equipment

·         Standard tools, methods, practices, and materials involved in the building trades

·         Applicable provisions of building, electrical, and plumbing codes

Personal Qualifications

·         Ability to train new hires

·         Ability to lead a crew of 1 to 2 Public Works personnel

·         Ability to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day and working overtime as directed or as needed

·         Ability to drive and to operate the tools, vehicles, and equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair activities

·         Ability to work independently and efficiently

·         Ability to work for extended hours in all-weather conditions

·         Ability to observe all safety measures and precautions required for the use of

equipment and machinery

·         Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the general public

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities

Work is performed independently and requires physical strength and agility necessary to perform light to heavy labor. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, and does require fieldwork to perform various types of inspections and repairs. When out in the field, risks physical hazards from working in and around traffic, heavy machinery, heights, and other underground utilities. Exposure to noise, vibration, hazardous and toxic materials, fumes, gases, and odors is routine.

Work requires physical strength and agility necessary to perform manual labor under all kinds of weather conditions. Work activities include combinations of sitting, standing, and walking and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds routinely. Work also requires the ability to see, hear, and smell in order to detect problems and be responsive to customer, team member, and personal safety. Must be able to work under stressful conditions at times.

Work requires the ability to foresee and prevent safety problems. Work must also follow appropriate safety procedures and the use of protective clothing and equipment including, steel-toed shoes and boots, hard hats, eye/ear protection, rain gear, gloves, traffic control equipment, and confined spaces safety kit.

Regular work hours are 7:00 am – 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.  Starting hourly rate will be between $25.01 and $30.00 based on experience and qualifications.
